Aerospace EMI/EMC Compliance

EMI/EMC compliance completed per DO-160D, MIL-HDBK-516C, and MIL-STD-461 enabling international flight clearance. EMIT cosite analysis automated for high-altitude platform antenna systems.

Complex antenna systems require comprehensive EMI/EMC analysis

A defense prime contractor developing high-altitude platforms needed to demonstrate EMI/EMC compliance across multiple standards to obtain flight clearance. The platforms carried complex antenna systems with potential for interference between colocated transmitters and receivers, and compliance documentation was required for both domestic and international operations.

The core challenge was performing comprehensive electromagnetic interference analysis for platforms with dozens of antenna systems operating across a wide frequency range. Manual analysis was impractical given the number of potential interference paths, and compliance documentation needed to satisfy multiple regulatory frameworks simultaneously.

Without demonstrated compliance, the platforms would be grounded indefinitely, blocking operational deployment and program milestones.

Key Constraint
Analysis needed to comply with DO-160D (civil aviation), MIL-HDBK-516C (airworthiness), and MIL-STD-461 (military EMI) simultaneously, with documentation suitable for submission to multiple certification authorities.

Automated cosite analysis with certification documentation

The engagement delivered comprehensive EMI/EMC analysis including automated EMIT cosite modeling, interference path analysis, and compliance documentation formatted for certification authority submission.

01
Assess
Inventoried all antenna systems and RF equipment on the platform. Documented frequency allocations, power levels, and operational modes. Identified applicable compliance standards and certification authority requirements.
02
Design
Designed automated EMIT analysis workflow to evaluate all transmitter-receiver pairs for potential interference. Specified coupling path models including antenna-to-antenna, conducted, and radiated coupling. Created documentation templates meeting certification authority requirements.
03
Build & Deploy
Implemented EMIT cosite analysis with automated screening of interference scenarios. Generated link budget analyses for flagged interference paths. Produced compliance documentation packages for DO-160D, MIL-HDBK-516C, and MIL-STD-461.
04
Advise & Improve
Supported certification authority reviews and addressed technical questions. Updated analysis for configuration changes as the platform evolved. Extended methodology to additional platform variants.

Flight clearance through demonstrated compliance

The engagement delivered comprehensive EMI/EMC compliance packages demonstrating that platform antenna systems meet all applicable standards. The automated EMIT analysis identified and characterized all potential interference paths, with detailed link budget analyses for scenarios requiring mitigation.

The platform obtained both domestic and international flight clearances, enabling operational deployment. The automated analysis approach has been retained for ongoing configuration management, allowing rapid assessment of proposed equipment changes.
